This is a great one because, as a verb in passive voice, it definitely can mean “stumbling speech,” which checks out here.

But in the active voice, it could mean “speech which overthrows,” which feels exactly the opposite!

Small press publishing was already pretty terrible, both on the distribution side for presses & on the contest-model and monetary investments required of writers.

But this SPD situation just made everything 1000% times worse.

And if it is, that suggests you either don’t view it as actual suffering or don’t view those people as actual people.
