Despite hosting different algal symbiont genera that initially photosynthesised like we expect "shallow" and "deep" algae to, strong photoacclimation to our experimental light conditions was seen within 35 days in juveniles.

Though our data reveal rapid symbiont acclimation, reduced growth rates and limited capacity for skeletal modification will likely limit the potential for mesophotic larvae to settle on shallow reefs.

Last Friday, students from across the United States and UK, from Mote Marine Laboratory & Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, began a coral ecophysiology workshop led by Dr Gretchen Goodbody-Gringley (CCMI) & Dr Tali Mass (University of Haifa) at the Little Cayman Research Centre.

Deeper coral larvae did not survive when transplanted onto shallow reefs. These results could provide hope, as they suggest that shallow water corals may be able to survive on mesophotic reefs if shallow-water reefs become less hospitable as a result of climate change.
