Why is job loss associated w/ decarbonization costly? Who is most affected? How can policy help? New work in JAERE finds the large welfare costs of job loss per worker are mostly due to ⬇️ * job quality * in alternative jobs. Unemployment plays a small role. #JaereFigureFriday

The paper uses a job search model to calculate lifetime welfare costs associated w/ job loss and applies it to the German coal mining industry. Lower job security & wages are > 97% of welfare costs, with younger workers more affected. An earlier coal exit = ⬇️ costs!

Recently, our paper on the welfare costs of Germany's coal phase-out was accepted by JAERE and is now available online. Many thanks to my co-authors Luke Haywood and Nicolas Koch and all my colleagues for their comments and support.
