Before everyone had a compass on their smartphone or a GPS in their vehicle, mariners relied on navigational tools and instruments like these newly added sextants in our Exploration Gallery! *This project was supported by a generous grant from the Newport News Arts Commission.

Take a look at this 1891 map of Newport News showing a bird's eye view of the terminus of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway and Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co. You can see the U.S. naval monitor Puritan in the dry dock of the N.N.S. & D.D. Co. at the April 24, 1889 opening.

Have you explored the amphorae in the Exploration Gallery? They were used to transport goods around the Mediterranean and help us understand ancient trade and culture. Stay tuned for updates on a mysterious object we recently treated that we lovingly call the "Frankamphora"! 🧟🏺

Riding in style 🚗⛵️ We’ve been loving these multi-vehicle pictures lately! In this one, two women are hanging out in a Chris-Craft 16ft Deluxe Runabout perched on top of the roof of a Hudson automobile. Both the car and the Chris-Craft are from 1935.

This summer we hosted young mariners from Commonwealth Catholic Charities, a nonprofit supporting refugees & immigrants. It was truly special to see their excitement as they connected with objects from their home countries. Through the water, we are 1 city, 1 nation, 1 world 🌍💙

Through the Save America's Treasures Grant, we've digitized 10K+ photo negatives, revealing some cool findings like these negatives! We dug into Edwin Levick's ledgers & found that these were taken using an early tricolor camera, hence "Red," "Green," & "Blue" at the bottom❤️💚💙
