April 22nd is Earth Day🌏, and this year's theme is "Planet vs. Plastics." The Hong Kong government has introduced a new disposable plastic regulation bill to restrict the usage of plastic products, which has officially come into effect today. 💪

During my time at #SKLMP, I have collaborated with experts & participated in studies & laboratory experiments, which have been invaluable in deepening my understanding of contaminant dynamics & broadening my research perspectives. 👁️‍🔎

🌊Oceans nurture life & offer hope, yet they are facing numerous ecological crises, including habitat loss, overfishing, pollution & climate change that result in biodiversity loss. The theme of World Oceans Day 2024 is "Awaken New Depths"✨, calling attention to marine issues.📢

Dr. Chong Chen has been selected for the prestigious Hong Kong Scholars program. His research focuses on the Global Estuaries Monitoring Programme, an “Ocean Decade Action” under the U.N.’s “Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030)” global initiative.

As a research assistant at SKLMP, 🧑‍🔬Miss Xu Ning’s primary focus is on fish stock assessment, utilizing various methods such as morphology analysis and eDNA 🧬metabarcoding. She has been involved in studying fishery resources🐟 across both marine and freshwater ecosystems.🌊

Dr Qin Xian 🧑‍🔬developed a keen interest in exploring the toxicity of environmental pollutants & their underlying toxic mechanisms during her doctoral studies at CityU. As a postdoc at SKLMP, her current research continues to focus on the toxicology of different pollutants & eDNA.

During her time in the GEM program at SKLMP, Miss Xitong Fu felt honored to contribute to filling the knowledge gap on pharmaceuticals in global estuaries. In the future, she plans to continue focusing her research on marine systems in the context of the ongoing climate change.✨

Dr. Dumas Deconinck🧑‍🔬 has developed a deep passion for DNA🧬 research during his academic journey. He currently serves as a postdoc at #SKLMP, focusing on using eDNA to monitor biodiversity in Hong Kong waters🌊 under the supervision of Prof. Leo Chan and Prof. Jianwen Qiu.

Miss Evonne Tan is passionate about ecotoxicology, concentrating on the interactions and effects of chemical pollutants in the marine environment. She aims to drive change through scientific research and inspire communities with outreach initiatives to protect the ocean.🌊🪸✨
