maybe if science twitter had taken all those classes they called “easy” more seriously they’d know how to communicate, not be exclusionary, and be more transparent with their work

The lack of women scientists on Shark Week isn’t something that’s bad for women in the abstract. It does concrete harm. It distorts who is visible in shark science, and shapes whose voices are heard and how loudly. It makes women invisible... #sharkweek scientificamerican.com/article/the-da…

Angel sharks do a great job of camouflagng in sand but these two are feeling particularly flashy today 😁 How would an angel shark wear pants? #HowItPants #SharkWeek2020

Low expectations for #SharkWeek's next celebrity jaunt. How about some some #DiverseSharks? Pelagic sharks can be quite similar because open water is open water, but benthic (bottom) habitats can be quite different, leading to some impressive shark and ray diversity.

Finally got out to La Jolla to snorkel for the first time in a while. Vis was decent, but didn’t see too many leopards :( i did see a few soupfin/tope sharks, some green sea turtles, and a host of guitarfish and bat rays! 🦈🦈🦈

When marine reserves are about everything BUT conservation, this is exactly what you get. Their declaration and dismantling are merely seen as "offenses" by the opposing parties and not a single species gains anything. #NotJustArea

First paper in our new issue on movement of pelagic sharks is out. Nice work by Ryan Logan, PhD and colleagues on seasonal movements of smooth hammerhead sharks frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…

As firefighters slowly and methodically contain the wildfires here in California, many people have asked—how does all of the ash and smoke settling down from the fires impact the ocean?

BREAKING: Gov. Newsom signs law allowing inmate firefighters in California to have records expunged, clearing the way for them to become professional firefighters once they are released from prison.

Triaenodon obesus is by far my favorite! For a shark that is clearly not the chunkiest out there, strange to name it “obesus” 😂

“Please don’t sneeze!” An Eastern Cleaner Clingfish takes a break from his busy cleaning of a Port Jackson #shark, on the tip of the shark’s snout. PS I also love the beautiful pattern of the denticles (the teeth-like scales covering the skin) on the snout :) click image to see

WOW! RARELY SEEN deep-sea Cirroteuthid octopus! And it's BIG—1.3 m (4.2 ft) long! Look at that mesh between its tentacles and how it puffs up like a giant octopus balloon! Seen by E/V Nautilus near Southwest Baker Island in 2019. 🎥bit.ly/3lqKIm7 #DailyJelly
