A rise in wildlife injuries in three Mara regions prompted a joint three-day patrol by MEP, @kwskenya and local conservancy rangers to address bushmeat snares and illegal habitat destruction. In Q1 2024 alone, MEP removed over twice the snares compared to 2023. #MaraElephants

When weather conditions are unfavorable for piloting drones, MEP rangers turn to an original human-elephant conflict mitigation tool—firecrackers! Loud, but safe to wildlife, this tool recently helped move 40 elephants out of a livestock area to safety.

In 6 years, collared elephant Fitz hasn’t left the Nyakweri Forest once despite his shrinking home–until now. In March, over a 24-hour period, Fitz moved down the escarpment to the border of the reserve. Every elephant movement tells a story. @kwskenya Wildlife Research & Training Institute @angamasafari

During a routine patrol, Pardamat Conservancy rangers monitored a limping sub-adult bull elephant and alerted MEP rangers who found an arrow wound on his leg. The @kwskenya/Sheldrick Wildlife Trust vet treated him on-site. Rangers continue to monitor his recovery.

Mara Elephant Project drone pilots participated in a routine Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) refresher training this week at headquarters. The mandatory training ensures all MEP drone pilots remain up to date with professional industry standards.

The Mara Elephant Project's "Bravo" ranger team increased their efforts to protect Loita Forest this week. They confiscated a power saw, 8 logs from recent tree harvests, and destroyed one charcoal kiln. MEP supports the community's forest conservation efforts.

MEP supports @kwskenya (KWS) in reducing human-wildlife conflicts. Recently, MEP helped relocate a lion to the Maasai Mara National Reserve and move buffalos from a settlement area. MEP is committed to the safety of both communities and wildlife beyond just elephants.

He’s back! Elephant #58 returned to Mara North with 4 arrow wounds. @kwskenya Vet Dr. Njoroge from Sheldrick Wildlife Trust treated him with help from the MEP helicopter. He always finds his way to Mara North Conservancy (MNC) for treatment. MEP and MNC rangers are monitoring his recovery

In February, MEP helped @kwskenya and Sheldrick Wildlife Trust treat a mother elephant with a severe leg wound and later reunited her with her calf. This week, MEP rangers monitored the same mom, fully healed and grazing peacefully with her calf—a perfect ending this Mother’s Day weekend!
