One of the first signs of spring is the flowering of the willows! Shining Willow is a tall shrub or short tree with smooth, glossy leaves. The yellow flower clusters attract queen bees, which eat the pollen for nourishment after their long winter hibernation. #WildflowerWednesday

April 7 is #InternationalBeaverDay ! These large rodents can grow up to 30 kg, and are known for gnawing down trees for food and to build lodges and dams. There's only one species of beaver in Manitoba now, but 1000s of years ago there were giant beaver, up to 2 m long and 100 kg!

Glandular Birch is a common shrub in moist areas of northern Manitoba. The twigs are covered with large resin glands that give it a pleasant scent. The wind-pollinated flowers bloom in early spring, and are arranged in clusters called catkins. #WildflowerWednesday
