Fantastic to be at London Legacy Development Corporation yesterday with all these amazing people working on gender equity, better urban design and proper engagement with women and girls. Sharing experience and best practice and finding out what's happening across the sector.

A few people have been asking us about inclusive skate parks so here’s a reminder of the work we did with Wheelscape, based on research from Sweden by @WhiteArkitekter. Read all about it here:

We posted before about this funded PhD opportunity into digital co-design for urban spaces with teenage girls but the person appointed has had to pull out.
So if you - or anyone else - wants to do this very important and ground-breaking work, please apply!

Fascinating statistics from research with teenagers in Ireland by Dr Carol Barron, Dublin City University. There's lots to learn from this but perhaps the most striking is that it’s not just teenage girls who aren't happy with what is currently being provided in parks.

It’s not just the design of spaces which make a difference for teenage girls, the facilities themselves matter too. Great to see Proludic UK designing equipment which isn’t just for the default male – with lower & narrower bars for example. Works various groups- inclusive design.

It's not just children who want more nature time! In our Parks for London research, 16-25yo (who visit nature <others) said time in nature should be part of their curricula. And childhood experiences w/ influence their current nature habits. theguardian.com/environment/20…

Inclusive spaces don't have to be big or expensive - see this lovely example from Christchurch NZ. And it's a hit with both teenagers and young families too.

Just love this.

“As a society we nag kids to get off their phones into the real world, but won’t make room for them… and are then surprised when children don’t flourish”
“…teenagers loitering in public spaces are met with adult suspicion and hostility”.

Some of our greatest impact happens where people have seen our message and research and then put it into practice themselves. Friends of Rowntree Park in York engaged with teen girls & created a month long programme of events to create a welcoming park!

It’s our 3rd birthday this week & we want to share more of our Parkwatch project:
Most of what is built for teenagers is mostly skateparks, MUGAs & BMX tracks. But what you helped us discover was that 92% of MUGAs users were male. 84% on skateparks and BMX tracks were male.
