One of southern Alberta's most iconic voices is returning - the western meadowlark! With their bright yellow chests and flutelike song, these grassland songbirds fill the air with music, marking the arrival of spring. Keep an eye out for them as they arrive back in #Alberta.

Some of #Alberta's rarest wildlife depend on healthy grasslands to survive. And ranchers help take care of these incredible places. This #NationalWildlifeWeek, we’re tipping our hats to the ranching community — thank you for being grassland stewards!

Spring has sprung on the prairies! The prairie crocus is one of Alberta’s earliest wildflowers and it's blooming now across southern Alberta. These fuzzy, purple beauties are a sure sign that warmer days are ahead. #grasslands #alberta #SpringVibes

Temperate grasslands are among Earth’s most endangered habitats—and Alberta’s grasslands hold 75% of our species at risk. Well‑managed cattle grazing mimics historic bison herds and keeps these prairies thriving. Hats off to ranchers caring for our grasslands! #EarthDay2025

When no birds are dancing, sharp-tailed grouse leks look like a trampled patch of prairie. Flattened vegetation, along with feathers and droppings are clues! Peak dancing happens mid-April, but some displays continue into early summer. #grasslands #Alberta

We’ve been racking up the miles searching for sharp-tailed grouse leks and signs of spring. Shooting stars, golden bean, and three-flowered avens are blooming. Chestnut-collared longspurs, pipits, and a few sparrows are back. #grasslands #Alberta

Pronghorn are curious by nature. In Alberta’s grasslands, they’ll often pause to check out sounds or movement—sometimes even approaching to investigate. Just watch quietly and give them space. #grassland #alberta #speedgoat

This is one of the best videos we've seen highlighting the history of the grasslands, their importance, and the current threats they face. Definitely worth the watch. #grasslands #Alberta shorturl.at/fD4RB

Today is #EndangeredSpeciesDay. #Alberta has 17 species listed as Endangered—many are prairie species like the short-horned lizard, ferruginous hawk, & western spiderwort. Their survival depends on healthy native grasslands & the ranchers who help care for them. #SpeciesAtRisk

We've seen snake mortalities on SE Alberta roads this week. As snakes leave their dens, they often cross warm roadways to travel or bask. Please watch for them, including in Lethbridge & Medicine Hat, and avoid hitting them. 🐍 #SaveOurSnakes #Grasslands

It’s fawn season in the grasslands! Deer & pronghorn fawns hide in tall grass, nearly scentless & still, while mom feeds nearby. If you see one alone, don’t worry. It's normal & she's likely close. #Grasslands #Alberta
