From the archive This 1920s portrait features Miss Muriel Alice Finnis with an AJS motorcycle in Herschell Street, Napier. Muriel was the daughter of Mrs Alice Finnis and Mr Albert Hardy Finnis, described in his obituary as ‘a well-known and highly esteemed resident of Napier’.

From our collection- this ceremonial adze (ruatangaeo) originated from the island of Mangaia in the Southern Cook Islands. The decoration, polished head & triple triangle lashings of a ruatangaeo are unique to Mangaian adzes. Hawke's Bay Museums Trust, Ruawharo Tā-ū-rangi, 40/58

From our collection- The Royal Navy submarine HMS Thorough visited several New Zealand ports in 1950 to carry out defence exercises with the Royal New Zealand Navy. The vessel is shown here at Breakwater Wharf, Napier, in August of that year.
