The SAMRC Scientific Merit Awards were not held without acknowledging the exceptional service of scientists in the gold and platinum categories.

The Bronze medals are awarded to scientists who have recently entered the health research field, with not less than five years post PhD experience.

Taking a bow in this category were:

In the silver awards category a salute is given to scientists who have made important scientific contributions within 10yrs of having been awarded their PhD or Master of Medicine (MMed).

This year, the award recipients were:

Awarded under the category 'Special Awards' were Ms Glaudina Loots and Mr Nick Buick.

Under the leadership of Mr Buick annual funding doubled by 2019/20.

Ms Loots was instrumental in the creation of the Strategic Health Innovation Partnership Initiative (SHIP) at the SAMRC.

This is the last Presidential award that Prof Gray will present in her capacity as the President & CEO of the SAMRC. In this sought after category, previous recipients include; Malegapuru Makgoba, Jerry Coovadia and Zena Stein.

Dr Mjwara joins this prestigious alumni.

Last night, 7 March 2024, the South African Medical Council held its 10th scientific merit awards to honour some of the best scientific research in South Africa especially in health sciences.

Finance Minister Mr Enoch Godongwana presented the #Budget2024 speech last week.

Being led by the Health Systems Research Unit, SAMRC researchers collaborated to provide commentary on improving the health of people in South Africa as it relates to the budget allocation.
