Amazed by the diversity of #Apples growing at >3000masl & extreme environment in #Skardu, #Hunza & #Gilgit. Locals say these are Kachura Amri, Quetta Amri, Suspolo, Gohar Aman, Red delicious, Golden delicious. All had special colors and tastes from their unique growing conditions

NOAA's GOES-16 satellite is capturing the shadow of today's total solar eclipse as it traverses the continental United States. Truly a once in a lifetime event.

The wild peach was domesticated in 4000 B.C. Farmers selected seeds from the tastiest fruits for re-planting. After 6000 years of artificial selection, the peach was:- → 16x larger. → 27% Juicier. → 4% Sweeter. Compared to its wild cousin. Which one would you rather eat?

Wild relatives of apples (Malus species), the main progenitor of domesticated apples (Malus sieversii from Central Asia) and domesticated apples (Malus domestica)! The story of modern #Apples includes natural selection, hybridization, gene flow, human selection, & breeding.

I worked in the fruit industry for about 40 years. I was always impressed by the hard work of the people who harvested (often hand harvesting, that is hard, skilled labor) our fruits and vegetables. Acknowledge them today when you eat.

My next Spotify playlist will be the original songs of Jimmy Buffett's covers - whose songwriters he referred to as Relief Pitchers. We're talkin' Ballad of Spider John, Biloxi, Boats to Build, Back to the Island & more. Anyone wanna be tagged with this when it's ready? Fins Up!

The richest man in the world says Americans must suffer the "hardship" of $2 trillion in cuts to public spending, while he still gets tax cuts, government contracts, and corporate welfare. No wonder I got a little angry talking about it. See this week's full Coffee Klatch here:
