We are all working with new in situ imaging of zooplankton, thinking this is a new thing... And then I land in a paper from 1981, doing in situ imaging of zooplankton with these pictures. 40 years, and almost as good as it was possible. Not digital, but doi.org/10.1016/0198-0…

Bumped into this Radiolarian art at Peg's Gallery City of Hudson, Ohio - Government! Apart from being the focus of our #NSFfunded research, these beautifully fragile organisms keep inspiring artists (like Lisa Demagall) all over the world

Seeking a collaborator who works with ai pattern recognition in images. Basic premise is that I have a bunch of photos of an invertebrate which have and have not a particular microbe associated with them. I’d like to use pattern recognition to do several things:

We had planned to go back home today, flying from Baltimore to Bermuda... But the weather decided to give us an extra day! Flight postponed, working in the hotel, children with videogames, eating nearby (roads have not been ploughed)... Life is good

Do abyssal species that grow only on polymetallic nodules have more restricted dispersal than those that do not? Contrasting distance-decay patterns in community similarity across the NE Pacific basin suggest they do! See our new study for more doi.org/10.1111/geb.13… #17dsbs

There have been a lot of publications about ctenophores in the last years, on all the amazing evolutionary solutions they have. More for my invertebrate evolution course!!

Mesopelagic peeps - having a walk with the kids I found that we had a massive beaching of myctophids in Bermuda. Are there records around of such events? They where everywhere. It is windy around, but nothing to think about massive killing of mesopelagic fish when when migrating
