After cleaning the #mistatecapitol muses, art conservators began the repair process by consolidating loose & flaking paint to reattach it to the canvas. They then applied a coat of varnish over the entire canvas to act as a protective layer and enhance the original paint colors.
When the #mistatecapitol muses were installed in the 1880s, they were adhered to the walls of the dome with white lead paste. Art conservators working on the rotunda scaffolding found the muses to be in relatively good condition and began their treatment with a gentle cleaning.

Art conservators have been working on the muses in the #mistatecapitol dome. Tomasso Juglaris painted these allegorical figures on 8-by-5-foot canvases in his Boston studio in 1886. The muses represent art, agriculture, law, science, justice, industry, commerce, and education.
