Once you awaken to your healing journey while in medical school, you can’t unsee the violence that is embedded in our medical education and health system. It’s been so dangerously pervasive and unchallenged that many have accepted this is just the way things need to be. Resist.
The heartbreaking thing is that this medical education and health system exploits and overburdens its students/staff *and* there are many in medicine who want to stay asleep of the violence bc it’s easier than demanding change and re-imagining how this could all be different.
This is my dear friend, Nakita.
Nakita and I were medical school classmates and both interns in New York City. Nakita tragically took her own life on May 26.
She is such a beautiful soul. She was so fun to be around. She was intelligent, charismatic, and confident. (1/x)
32 physicians on the AMA RVU Update Committee advise Medicare on the "relative value" of healthcare services.
Only 4 of them are women. OB/Gyn gets one vote. It's not a stretch to surmise that equitable valuation of women's health is not a top priority. ama-assn.org/about/rvs-upda…
Caregiving can be so isolating. Most peripheral cancer support is geared toward spouses/young children of patients. It’s impossible to find a therapist who takes insurance. Many resources have such narrow eligibility. Added guilt of knowing your loved one is going through worse.
Waiting in the Costco gas line and an older couple both got out to pump gas together. One set up the tank while the other paid and they both chatted happily to pass the wait together. Then they traded off grabbing the receipt and closing the cap. Such a simple, wholesome moment.
If we mistreat & dehumanize young doctors--essentially teaching them that human life is not of value--they may learn to dehumanize patients.
Not only do our patients deserve our respect and kindness, so do our learners: our students, residents, and fellows.
Beyond proud of my amazing friend and baby med sib who managed to do two masters in med school and matched at his number one program!! All while being an incredible support for his friends and family ❤️ So excited for all you’ll accomplish next and the people you’ll get to help✨
Nothing like female friendship. The support??? It’s like you have 5 extensions of yourself but without the self doubt and insecurity, cause your gals are gonna remind you daily that you’re worth everything and more. They’re gonna uplift you every chance they get. Sisterhood.
The thing about aging and elder care is that, like child care, you just assume that there must be services and systems in place designed to support people who are aging and in poor health/their families and then you find that no, there’s actually nothing. Worse than nothing.
