In our latest work, we find that the conserved HEATR5 proteins, best known for roles in AP1 traffic, are directed to different functions by a suite of non-conserved binding partners that adopt a similar structural fold. doi.org/10.1083/jcb.20…

Thanks Fèlix Campelo Ishier Raote Francesca Bottanelli for the opportunity to talk today at the #membrane seminars. I had a blast! For new followers excited by Ishier's endorsement of my social media content, I'm mainly at mstdn.

I am super excited to announce that @madkeenen and I are co-organizing a special interest subgroup at this year's ASCB (in San Diego!) on all things multinucleate. Spread the word, and send in abstracts by August 6th! Reach out to us with any questions.

If you’re one of my classmates from the Berkeley MCB PhD from the entering class of 1995 and have not heard from me about the reunion we’re organizing next summer, send me a DM or email. We’d love to see you even if you didn’t graduate or are no longer in the field.

A rare dip onto this site for me. Martha did a fantastic job introducing us to D. hansenii and her work establishing tools to monitor organelle morphology and function. Admissions committees, take note!! Martha is applying for PhD positions this fall!

Dear folks in Arkansas, Alabama and Ohio. Please contact your Senators and House members. FDA has been told it must reduce its workforce by 50% in a month. Three of the five FDA research centers are in those states and their economies will be significantly impacted.

Dozens of Alaskans – potentially over 100 in total – are being fired as part of the Trump administration’s reduction-in-force order for the federal government.   Many of these abrupt terminations will do more harm than good, stunting opportunities in Alaska and leaving holes in

Pleased to share collaborative work with Mara Duncan led by amazing grad student Anusha CBNA . We reveal unexpected dynamics in the endolysosomal system regulated by Rab35 that are critical for lumen formation in a model of early development. 1/ biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

We discovered that there is a massive, but transient enlargement of the endosomes. We find a >1uM hybrid endosome that contains markers of both the early and late endosome (arrowheads). 5/

Importantly, we can suppress all defects by loss of Rab35 by overexpressing Rab7, the Rab that controls transport to the late endosome and lysosome. This suggests that elevated endo-lysosomal function is critical for the establishment of the apicosome, and thus lumenogenesis. 12/
