UK Govt plans to reverse immigration detention closures. iNews reports the first phase of this will cost over a whopping £170 million, just to get 2 old sites habitable again. The winners are the big multinationals, the losers are the rest of us. inews.co.uk/news/politics/…

UK faces a refugee homelessness emergency, with a massive 99% increase just this year. If granted refugee status people have just 28 days to move out of asylum accommodation. Combined with a housing crisis & work ban, the results are sadly predictable. insidehousing.co.uk/home/refugee-a…

The evidence is clear. Closing borders & routes of movement are acts of national self-harm. On top of the harm to communities, families, and individuals.

We’ve reimposed visa restrictions on Colombia because we had a small rise in asylum claims. This is exactly how our border policy drives irregular migration. Have to be here to claim asylum, but any suspicion you’ll claim asylum we won’t let you get here safely.

The UK's asylum & immigration systems are notoriously labyrinthine & ever-changing. Forcing people to try & navigate it without legal support is a clear travesty of justice & inevitably puts lives at risk. Restoring legal aid is urgent.

As Labour forge ahead with the Conservative plan to ramp up UK immigration detention, it's important to assess the current state & costs of the estate. Migration/refugee NGOs! Is there a smallish piece of research you sometimes wish someone would do? A friend doing a Masters in Global Development and Humanitarian Practice would like to do their MA dissertation on something useful to the sector. Any ideas welcome!

Legal bods! Do you have any suggestions for how a friend can respond to HO requests for ID for a long residency claim? They've been in the UK 23yr and have no ID whatsoever. HO threatening not to consider application without ID... Presumably this is a common situation?
