Sydney Brenner referring to omics/multi-omics without mechanistic models as “low input, high throughout, no output” is deliciously malicious genius.

Our latest paper: Rodrigues, Nott & Sisson (2019) Likelihood-free approximate Gibbs sampling arxiv.org/abs/1906.04347 Using regression models to approximate intractable full conditional distributions within a Gibbs sampler, to fit a 13,140 parameter model!

Why I like the new (Mike Morrison) poster format (a shortish thread): Disclaimer: I see the value of posters but usually don’t enjoy most poster sessions (eg MASAMB consistently good but an exception imho) 1/7

Next Tuesday I’ll be giving the special lecture at the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) Winter School at QUT: Large Scale Robustness Analysis And The Elusive Ubiquity Of Turing Pattern. Check ws.amsi.org.au/special-lectur… for details. Very much looking forward to meeting friends and colleagues.

We are looking for a bright post-doc to join the ARC Training Centre transforming maintenance through data science. The one, specifically focussed on Natural Language Processing. Prospective staff : Jobs at UWA : The University of Western Australia external.jobs.uwa.edu.au/cw/en/job/5031…

This is superb&shows that there can be no good #syntheticbiology without good engineering&math modelling (everything else just tinkering, poking around in the dark): Hard Limits and Performance Tradeoffs in a Class of Antithetic Integral Feedback Networks cell.com/cell-systems/f…

#synbio also has lots to offer to tackle the #climatecrisis. But we need better in silico design approaches to make innovation scalable and cannot rely on trial and error.

That’s lovely: excellent #synbio based on sound mathematical modelling. Can’t have the former without the latter biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Turing patterns are common but not robust: cell.com/cell-systems/f… with Natalie Scholes, David Schnoerr & Mark Isalan. We performed 10^11 stability analyses to find that many network motifs can produce Turing patterns. First paper from our VolkswagenStiftung Life? project

GpABC: a Julia package for parameter inference & model selection using i) simulation-based ABC/ABC-SMC, or ii) ABC with GP emulation. Excellent work from Evgeny, Jonathan, Tara, @lisi_roe, very pleased to co-supervise this group project with Michael P.H. Stumpf. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
