This is probably the largest river gravel extraction site in the Pacific. International development partners have stepped up their funding of Pacific Infrastructure & this site is the source of some of their aggregate. Either the safeguards are missing or they don't work.

Excavators are working in what was a freshwater river.

Now the river is a muddy mess and plumes of sediment and turbid water travel downstream through villages who rely on clean water for their livelihoods.

We drove for more than a kilometre up through the mined river channel. They plan to mine for a further two kilometres upstream.

We have been working with partners in the region for the past seven years to support a transition to sustainable sources of aggregate. Will the majour infrastructure funders step up and join us in this work?
