'One by one, members of CT's tenant union shared their stories...'

We showed up in force at the Capitol on Thurs with a unified message: Stop evictions for retaliation, discrimination & gentrification. Expand Just Cause!

Lawmakers have < 3 weeks to act.

“It’s a huge win, and it wouldn’t have happened if not for tenant unions beating the drum for the past several years demanding that every dollar of federal financing and subsidies be conditioned on tenant protections,” said Tara Raghuveer, via Fran Quigley. commondreams.org/opinion/biden-…

Update: The Royals and Chiefs spent over $6 million ($105 per vote) on their stadium campaign, the most spent in a local race in Kansas City's history.

The opposition, led by @kctenants, spent $1.90 per 78,350 no vote.

58% of the county voted with the tenant union.

Without a plan on the rent, we don’t have a plan on inflation.

The rent is too damn high, and there are still shots the Biden admin needs to call. The most important and urgent: rent regs in all units financed with federally-backed loans. They can do this, and they should.

KC TENANTS AND JACKSON COUNTY VOTERS SHUT DOWN THE STADIUM SALES TAX. The largest transfer of public funds to private enterprises in our region’s history, $2 billion over 40 years. The people took on the billionaires. The people won. Nothing is inevitable if we organize.

We were outspent 50:1* and we won. Billionaires can’t buy Kansas City, billionaires can’t extort the people. Not with KC Tenants, the 10,000-member tenant union fighting back 😌

'The Connecticut Tenants Union is working to ban no-fault evictions... Last year, the group also negotiated with a large-scale landlord... [RI organizers] see their work as the first step towards creating a similar, statewide tenant organization.' 🔥

🚨Breaking: We just disrupted a sham 'listening session' asking questions that the teams don't want to answer.

KC Tenants Leader Denise:
'In this crowd, people want to know why should us working people subsidize billionaires.'

Remember the tenant union in Branford that went public last month? Though there is much still be done—including getting the agreements in writing—they've already made progress in winning greater respect in their housing. Read a follow-up story here:

“You got to be all the way done with waiting for someone else to do something. Anyone can do this — and should do this, all over the damn country.” Read Jacobin on the Louisville Tenants Union: jacobin.com/2024/03/govern…

Our government is subsidizing this abuse.Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac made $1.8 billion in lucrative loans available to Greystar with NO strings attached.

If a landlord benefits from even a penny of public money, the government must require they treat tenants right.

This is how no-fault evictions work.

For the tenants, it means losing our HOMES—where we display our art, spend time with our neighbors & grandkids, recover from our illnesses.

For Uprealty, mass eviction notices are simply 'how the company typically operates.'

Landlords have inflated rents 20% since 2020, driving overall inflation.

Glad to see FTC taking action against rent setting algorithms. President Biden can create additional relief for tenants by regulating rents.

SCOOP: CT State Sen. Rob Sampson said if the state enacted proposed eviction protections for renters, it would be “the same thing” as slavery for landlords.

Housing Committee leadership called the remark “very insensitive.”

Journalist Thomas Birmingham: “if you as a landlord are unhappy about…how difficult evicting tenants with cause is, you are more than welcome to use your American freedom to stop being a landlord at any time…[we don’t] have the freedom, though, to suddenly stop needing shelter”

CTTU President Hannah Srajer is taking in CT Senator Sampson, who is opposed to eviction protections. And she’s winning!

Yesterday, the Lenox St Tenant Union went PUBLIC to demand collective negotiation with their landlord, Ocean Management.

That's our second tenant union action in one week. Connecticut tenants are rising up.
