If a process (retrospective, standup, user research session...) is tedious, it's probably wrong. Try changing it, or even dropping it. I know of several effective no-standup teams, for example, that would find adopting standups tedious and unhelpful.

Selection on the dependent variable: You can't identify patterns that contribute to failure if you only look at the failure cases, because any patterns that you detect might be just as prevalent in the successful cases, and you'll never know because you didn't look at those.
