This is so wrong. You can mask it as thought provoking warning about the rise of fake news but it shamefully contributes to it. And we cannot keep parodying and making light of our core institutions, and then wonder why they fall apart in our hands. bbc.co.uk/news/technolog…

Eisenhower was commanding a battalion of tanks; Agatha Christie had just had The Mysterious Affair at Styles publiahed; Colonel Sanders had set up a ferry company on the Ohio river. Fun game!

This 2017 Foreign Policy piece on what a new US civil war might look like is a timely read. It might be more likely than you'd think... foreignpolicy.com/2017/10/10/wha…

"I seek a kind person who will educate my intelligent boy, aged 11." This was the personal ad my Viennese grandparents put in the Manchester Guardian in August 1938, looking for someone to take in my father. It saved his life. He was fostered by a wonderful Welsh couple.

The world we have lost. The C17th “Dutch House” stood on the corner of Bristol’s High Street & Broad St. Saved by the Lord Mayor from traffic engineers in 1900, it was badly damaged but not destroyed by bombs on 24 Nov 1940. It was needlessly demolished 3 days later.

#LionsRugby not at the races in the 2nd half but honestly, this has been the most disgraceful game of international rugby I can think of. Referee team totally compromised. World Rugby robust stance on dangerous tackles was all but suspended for 80 mins.

1. In The Coddling, Greg Lukianoff and I pointed to Instagram as a main suspect in the sudden rise of depression/anxiety among Gen Z girls that began around 2012. New report: Facebook’s own internal research supports that hypothesis. wsj.com/articles/faceb…

To borrow a phrase from Peter Hennessy, they don't make them like Her Majesty any more. The Britain that made her no longer is. A quiet, calm constant and the truest servant of our nation. God save the King.

This time last year, I predicted that Russia would invade Ukraine. The question one year later is whether there is a way to end this war, or whether it is destined to grow into something much larger. 1/7 bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…

We use the word 'disgrace' too much in public life, but it's absolutely warranted for the WRU. *Everything* they touch turns to dust. When the Netflix doc airs, we're going to look like village idiots. This matters, not just for rugby, but for communities and for brand Wales

“It has therefore been said quite truly that a man grows with the greatness of his task. But he must have within himself the greatness to grow; otherwise even the most difficult task is of no benefit to him. More likely he will be shattered by it.” —Carl Jung

Have to admit I'm more shocked and disturbed by what happened in Israel than probably anything in my life. Far crueler and bestial than 9/11 or even Paris. A little window into genocide - and anyone who still thinks Hamas wouldn't kill every Jew in Israel is deluding themselves

All of us in the UK who are not Jewish - an immense, an overwhelming majority - have a responsibility in these troubled times to make our Jewish fellow-citizens feel valued & safe. A responsibility that clearly right now we are failing to meet. It shames the country.

Let us learn from the words of Robert Kennedy who calmed a nation: "Let us replace the violence and the stain of bloodshed that has spread across our land, with an effort to understand with compassion and love."
