Today is the anniversary of the death of Shireen Abu Akleh, murdered by Israeli forces in Jenin refugee camp three years ag. She was a dedicated and beloved journalist. Shireen’s assassination was a message to all Palestinian journalists: they are also targets of deadly violence.

An Israeli settler just shot Odeh Hadalin in the lungs, a remarkable activist who helped us film No Other Land in Masafer Yatta. Residents identified Yinon Levi, sanctioned by the EU and US, as the shooter. This is him in the video firing like crazy.

Utterly devastated. Every time another Palestinian journalist is killed, I’m reminded of the impunity—and the complicity of those who did nothing when Israel killed my aunt. Since then, over 200 journalists have been murdered.

There is this little memorial in Stratford-upon-Avon, outside the Royal Shakespeare Company, for Shireen Abu Akleh who was killed by Israeli forces in 2022. It looks like a pilgrimage here, with the two photos. I hope this gave some solace to who brought it here.

Ali Samoudi is a veteran journalist in Jenin who worked closely with Shireen Abu Akleh & was shot in the shoulder when an Israeli sniper opened fire in May 2022, killing Shireen. Israeli troops arrested Ali in April & he has been imprisoned in administrative detention ever since.
