Wonderful time attending an international data science conference in China! As a criminologist, it’s my first time attending a data science conference. The advancement of data science in chatting, writing, and quantitative data analysis is pertinent to almost all disciplines.

How to learn the topic of reentry? Simulation! In week 1 upon release, all my students were busy with getting IDs and attending programs and no one ate. week 2, many went to plasma and pawn shops to get money to survive. Week 3, many of them “took chances” and returned to jail.

New pub alert 📢: finally we have solid data analysis on the Pandemic’s impact on justice-involved youth! Compared to pre-pandemic, more youth with mental health struggles entered the juvenile justice system during the pandemic. Lockdown took a huge toll on the vulnerable.

Ron Wright, the 27th person in Florida wrongfully convicted and put on death row, shared how he spent three and half years on death row before he was found innocent by the appellate court. Quite an insightful guest lecture! Students discussed many questions with Ron Wright!

Two of my stellar students in research methods course! The course includes regression modeling, using SPSS, conducting a mini ethnography, developing and conducting an interview, and a full research paper. Students hardworking and very focused like them made me proud!

The sweetest moments end of the semester: students came to my office to send a gift of appreciation, asked me to take photos with them, and registered for more courses I would teach next semester after taking my courses this semester. My heart melted. I am beyond grateful ❤️❤️

It’s about that time! Served as an honor guard in the ceremony! We functioned as poles—standing there to form an aisle 😆. Quite a few students recognized me and ran over to hug me and took photos with me. Even functioning as a pole, I am a jolly pole with a melting heart! 🥰🥰

New pub alert! 🚨🚨👇👇 Lots of time prior studies linked procedurally just policing with citizens’ “perceived legitimacy of law.” The question left is: will procedural justice actually affect people’s criminal behavior? This study directly responded to this question.

Great time sharing my application of experimental learning in classroom! Via role playing, students walked in the shoes of people who went to DMV, social services, and other institutions after release. Learning by doing: understand the system, apply knowledge, think critically.

So heartwarming to receive appreciation gifts from my students at the end of the semester! I am truly fortunate to support them, help them build strengths, and see them explore the topics they are passionate about with deep thoughts, enormous enthusiasm, and critical thinking ❤️
