Today in 1916.. The "Farewell Letter" from Seán Mac Diarmada(McDermott), Kilmainham Jail, 11th May 1916, to John Daly, 15 Barrington Street, Limerick City. Seán Mac Diarmada was executed by firing squad the next day at the age of 33. #Limerick #OTD

Cpt Edmond John Landers was born in the village of Oola, County Limerick on 7 July 1937. He emigrated to the U.S. in May 1957 and was drafted into military service a year later. Cpt Landers was killed in action in Vietnam on this day May 15th 1968 and is buried in Oola Cemetery.

Today in 1642 Irish Confederate troops, commanded by Sir Garret Barry, besieged King John's Castle for 5 weeks until the English Protestant garrison surrendered on the 23rd of June. This was part of the Irish Confederate Wars, also called the Eleven Years’ War.

On this day 19 May 1832, the antiquarian and writer Standish Hayes O’Grady was born in Castleconnell, Co. Limerick. Although qualified as a civil engineer, he is best remembered for Silva Gadelica, a collection of tales from medieval Irish manuscripts.

Dorothea Conyers was an Irish romance writer. She grew up in County Limerick and spent most of her life living there. She started writing in 1900 and completed about 40 works. Her novels centered around the life of Irish sporting gentry. She died on this day 25 May 1949 #OTD

Moloney, William Joseph, linguist and journalist, was born at South Hill Cottage in Limerick city on this day, 28 May 1885. From 1908 he was employed by Reuters news agency, and would go on to write for them for the next 36 years as a correspondent all over the world.
