“Good” breathing is not as simple as breathing through your nose

The nose offers so much benefit to us, making it worth it

But it goes deeper than that

Every persons experience is different, and their behaviors express that

It has to be measured

Ah, this all has the potential to be “good”

But we can’t minimize breathing to mechanics and techniques only

It MIGHT work out better for you

Mechanics, techniques, only part of the equation

It’s the individuals experience that makes the difference

'Just nasal breathe'

This is nasal breathing... and it's dysfunctional

Switching to strictly nasal breathing doesn't magically fix your problems

Take a deep breath

The reason this relaxes you is because as a society we’ve decided it does

Have you actually seen what happens to your respiration?

Loss of CO2, lack of oxygenation

Deep breaths aren’t what you think they are… unlikely to be helping you

Everyone telling you to breathe through your nose

No one asking you why you aren’t

It’s behavioral. Mechanics are only one piece of the puzzle

Physical pain often boils down to tissue intolerance

Filling up the stress bucket impacts you physically

Foam rolling, massage guns and shit like this are simply tools but don’t address the issue

Learn with your body. Teach the system it has space to move

This has POTENTIAL to work

But, simply breathing through your nose, slowly, softly, doesn’t always = improved oxygenation

Have to marry mechanics and psychology

The way you breathe matters!
This is great, but take it a step further and measure your respiration!

Only focusing on rate, depth, etc. doesn’t mean you’re breathing optimally.

Here's an example of how box breathing through the nose, isn't helping you with your physiology

You may 'feel' like it's helping you, but you're under oxygenated

breathing is a behavior. the body has to learn to prefer a higher level of CO2

You want to be above the red line

One of the easiest ways to reduce pain and reduce risk of injury in the gym is to work in all planes of motion

Learn to rotate

Explore movement

Your body and performance will thank you

Just did a breathing assessment with a client

Full hour, all nasal.

Not one time did he go to an optimal place of CO2

In fact, he never went above 28. Threshold is 35

Breathing is not as simple as mechanics

It is learned. It is psychological. It is behavioral.

nasal breathing has a host of positive benefits that mouth breathing doesn’t

But

Breathing is behavioral

Behaviors are labeled good or bad based on outcome

Nasal breathing alone doesn’t mean you have good CO2 levels
