Silphium, from which our publishing imprint Silphium Press derives its name, was first documented growing along the coast of Cyrenaica, Libya. But the plant was thought to have disappeared from the ancient Mediterranean world sometime during the first century CE.

In 2009, Algerian artist Kader Attia used couscous, an Algerian staple, to build a scale model of the ancient city of Ghardaia, Algeria, a UNESCO 🏛️ #Education #Sciences #Culture 🇺🇳 world heritage site since 1982. The model was made from cooked couscous and sits on a wooden table. Collection Tate Modern
