Alright, I'm gonna say it: I am an AI in Education skeptic. I think there are ethical, legal, and environmental issues with the use of AI that need clarification, at the least, before schools start promoting the use of AI. 1/

I’m quoted today in Pittsburgh City Paper on a topic that’s important to me—giving Serpentine Dr. in Schenley Park back to pedestrians and bicyclists. The good news is that according to the piece (by Matt Petras), Pittsburgh will close the road to cars by the end of summer. Walkers won!

In undergrad, one of my classmates was walking on the side of a road in Austin's Zilker Park. A car hit him and he died. So I appreciate this Derek Krissoff essay on a campaign in a Pittsburgh neighborhood to give a park road back to pedestrians. Link: derekkrissoff.substack.com/p/giving-the-p…

Victory! Serpentine Drive has reverted to walkers-and-bicyclists only, a path through Schenley Park to sit and read or contemplate the crumbling WPA grandeur without fear of getting run over. No more cars, Pittsburgh did it—and they did it with a BOULDER.

What are some cool pieces of writing that discuss recipes or cook books critically? I’m looking for things to help my freshmen understand what recipes or cookbooks do BESIDE providing us with instructions for food preparation.

A goal is to one day have a book I acquired cited in a U.S. Supreme Court opinion. Until then, having a book cited in presidential campaign oppo research will do—the Trump campaign dossier on J.D. Vance highlights "Appalachian Reckoning: A Region Responds to Hillbilly Elegy."

If there are no books at the campus bookstore, fewer and fewer at the library, and endless talk of content, educational resources, and long-form scholarship (instead of, you know, the b-word), is it clear that higher ed wants students to read books?

This is quietly one of the more worrying/bearish things I've read about generative AI. They're running out of data. They're getting more expensive but not much better and not really anymore powerful. It's like I warned you!

.Corey O'Connor I just mailed (and emailed to your generic info address) a petition signed by me and a bunch of my neighbors, and don’t want it to get lost in the mayoral transition/holiday shuffle. Please let me know if there’s a better way to get this to you! cc: Daniel Gilman
