On the second day of our #ChristmasCountdown, we’re highlighting pantropical spotted dolphins. We often see these acrobatic dolphins leaping from the waves in deeper coastal waters, but sometimes they come in closer to shore and associate with species like spinner dolphins. 1/2

Is this a bottlenose dolphin? A false killer whale? Nope! This is a pygmy killer whale (Feresa attenuata) — and our fourth species highlight for the #MMRPChristmasCountdown.

We had an incredible encounter off the Waiʻanae Coast yesterday — humpback whales and bottlenose dolphins together. We launched the drone to get body condition measurements of these whales, and were delighted to see the dolphins with them! 🎥: Liah McPherson NMFS 21476
