Been a long time since a Lions game has had this much hype and anticipation , performing well under the intense spotlight is the next obstacle to confront , overall a great challenge to have

Congrats to Eddie Betts on his 300th game , doubt if there has ever been a more admired and skillful player ,that left foot banana goal yesterday was pure genius , even Peter Daicos would have been proud of that one

We only need to hear a little from Neale Daniher to be certain that his new book will be a thought provoking must read , the wisdom and humour under extreme adversity that he exhibits so well inspires us all to be better people. The man is a gem.

I agree with shortening game length, one simple option may be re-adjusting time off, back in the day 1/4’s were 25m+ timeoff,1/4’s recently 20m+timeoff but still run over 30m because what constitutes time off has grown enormously over the years, less timeoff = shorter game length

Sad for footy that Alex Rance has retired , I firmly believe that players get better by the generation , even allowing for that cycle of constant improvement no other key defender I have seen matches his dominating presence to control the back 50 , he has been an all time great

Winners automatically get the plaudits but Nick Kyrgios proved last night that great respect can come from the highly skilled and desperate fighting effort that he produced last night

Dermott Brereton always played a bit crazy brave,he epitomised that courage is not the absence of fear(that's stupidity), true bravery is not letting fear control your actions, Dermott did this as well as any player I've seen, we all hope the physical aftermath is not too severe

So sad , would be great to give Quaden a hug to show we care and are on his side , but long term stopping the bullying of him or anyone else is a must

Great that ‘social distancing’ seems to be helping.Acknowledgement and reward for good behavior is critical.Unfortunately the 90/10 rule always applies. The majority do what’s asked but a minority lack the intellect or discipline to comply.Imagine the benefit if 100% complied.

Convincing the recalcitrant minority to follow the game plan is no easy task but must include explain and sell, explaining in specific detail what is required and why, then sell sell sell that the plan will work if we all follow it,that it is an investment not a sacrifice

The magnificent unpredictability of sport emphasized yet again at the MCG always bemuses me when ‘experts’ base predictions so much on what happened last game even professional players are prone to inconstant performance it is what makes sport so watchable

Observing USA currently it seems to me that basically Democracy is about freedom respect and responsibility , freedom to vote for your candidate of choice at an election and the responsibility to accept and respect that the majority may vote otherwise

Sometimes you just scratch your head with what you hear , being outraged about a simple uttering that all lives matter is bewildering as is the view that violent riots are ok if you support the underlying cause , beats me !

CA certainly have plenty of cheek.Mess around with the government currently mandated January 26 being known as Australia Day and then wanting a favor from the government to jump the COVID vaccination queue

In team sport I have always believed champion players make champion coaches not vice versa , the great Tom Brady is currently a prime example

Increasing the mandatory concussion break to 12 days is a very good initiative from the AFL this is one area where extreme caution is a must

A wise man once told me there are normally three truths - my truth , your truth and the actual truth , unfortunately there are always those arrogant enough to believe there views are the definitive truth rather than simply there own opinion

Leigh Matthews (@leighrmatthews) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Changed my mind about the most appropriate Aus Day date the official gov website aph.gov.au explains how we all became Australians rather than British subjects on January 26 1949 seems an ideal date to commemorate

The stop/start nature of Gridiron allows it to be the ultimate coach controlled game but still needs great players to successfully execute the plays , personally I hope the increasing coach control in the AFL is not allowed to ruin the chaotic and instinctive nature of our game
