The Queen of Leather competition was held in the 1950s to promote the use of leather. Queens of Industry were women chosen by industries through beauty pageant style competitions to become official representatives of their respective fields.

Here, craftsmen at Thomas Lote Woollatt Ltd of Birmingham St (c.1900) make saddle-trees (the skeleton of a saddle) They use drawshaves to shape it. The breast plates they wear hold the tree in place whilst they work. We hope they did a finger count at the end of the day...👀
