Back from Lausanne now, but already missing the dreamy lakeside views. A city of trees. Thousands of them, on boulevards, in parks & forested slopes down to the water, bringing delicious shade & graceful beauty. Restaurant prices are 🙄 but public transport & walkability A1.

After last Govt’s dire failure on renewable auctions, this is hugely welcome. Worth noting that while 5GW of offshore wind is significant, it’s still about half of what we need each year to meet Govt’s own 2030 target. And prices show renewables clearly cheapest new build tech👍

I made a trailer for my book, in the breathless style of an old-fashioned movie trailer, ably assisted by my own partner in crime, Guy Ducker A bit silly, perhaps, but I love to play... Let me know what you think. The link to pre-order the book is here: shorturl.at/9Ydkx

The media told me a lot about the multi-millionaires who tragically lost their lives in the yacht sinking, just as I learnt plenty about the billionaires who lost their lives in the titanic sub I will never know anything about the migrants who lost their lives in the channel

Woman of the Day Ada Wright (1862-1939) of Sidmouth, social worker, suffragette and serial window breaker. Growing up, she chafed against women’s inequality and "wished I had been born a boy". Ada taught for a while but her real interest lay in social work. Hindered by her

In relation to Grenfell, justice delayed is justice denied. It is absolutely clear that criminal investigation and prosecution should have preceded or ran alongside the inquiry. It should not have been delayed until after the inquiry report

Had #Grenfell Tower been a luxury apartment block housing wealthy people, I'm pretty sure that the prosecution and conviction of those who enabled the disaster would have happened by now.

For those asking, the ‘fierce backlash last night’ entailed two information requests to our press office. One from the Daily Mail and one from the Daily Telegraph. Please remember to vote in this year’s National Trust AGM.

My therapist told me that constantly fantasising about living off grid in a woodland cottage that doubles as a library that triples as an animal rescue centre, is actually a coping mechanism & a sign of exhaustion. To which I say, well imaginary you is no longer invited

I fulfilled a lifelong ambition today of being in the The Guardian : alongside the The New Yorker , the paper I most admired & wanted to write for when I was a wide-eyed teen. In Edinburgh, not knowing any professional authors, it seemed an impossible dream... theguardian.com/society/articl…

I love this. My favourite malapropism was when an Italian friend really did tell me that she hoped she had got a job because: ‘I tickled the right boxes’.

I am told that early copies of my book will be delivered by Wiley. And, being a person of a certain age, I cannot help but assume that the box will be labelled 'Acme Books' and will contain dynamite. MEEP!!
