Student shot during lunch inside Omaha Northwest High is the 223 shooting on a k-12 school campus so far this year. Shootings happen at a school in the United States multiple times each week. Most of them don't make national news.

Northwest High Principal Kimberly Jackson sent the following letter to staff and families this afternoon. Northwest students won’t have school tomorrow and will return Thursday. “It is okay to struggle. To be upset. To be angry. We will be here for one another.”

In the wake of the shooting at Northwest High school yesterday, the Omaha Police Department is aware of and is investigating several social media threats to local schools. Thus far, none of the threats are deemed credible.

Based on our investigations, a 14 year old student has received long term suspension, an 11 year old has been booked into jail, and a 13 year old has been cited for their involvement in sending threats. Investigators believe there will be additional arrests coming soon.

Omaha Public Schools officials said they’re not planning on implementing additional safety measures, like metal detectors, after the shooting at Northwest High on Tuesday. They said current protocols are robust & were sufficient during the incident: omaha.com/news/local/edu…
