We need to design our bike infrastructure for all ages & abilities, including & especially this well dressed person & kid in the trailer. 🚲 ❤️

Does your grocery store look like this?

If not, it’s not because bikes universally can’t be used for groceries.

It’s probably one or both:
1) zoning created large distances between housing & stores.
2) the streets between housing & the store are unsafe for biking.

“Empty-nest baby boomers own 28% of three-bedroom-plus U.S. homes, while millennials with kids own just 14%.“

My parents and my in-laws live in larger homes than I do (with my family incl. young kids).

They also live in neighborhoods that will be challenging… 1/3

Both of these things happened on one short ride around my neighborhood today. It’s wild out here. 🙃

(Sound on to hear how much warning we had on the fire truck approaching).

This is why we need FULLY connected networks of protected bikeways.

This family-friendly 2.5 mile ride included a single unprotected block.

Notice the difference between the first 30 secs/last 10 secs & the one unprotected block in between.

Walking & biking as transportation means I can pause to notice and appreciate the traffic I’m not stuck in.

Build it and they will come.

And if you can’t get them to build it (permanent bike parking), find a decent temp option on Buy Nothing & ask if they’ll accept a donation.

Would still love to see permanent bike parking at all playgrounds, but this is better than nothing! 🚲❤️

If it fits, I sits.

Most people want to get to where they’re going as quickly & safely as possible… including pedestrians whose safety is put at risk when drivers block crosswalks like this.

Biking with kids can be high stress, including:
-backing up vehicles
-constantly checking for cross traffic at intersections, driveways & alleys
-navigating narrow & bumpy sidewalks w/ pedestrians
-avoiding the door zone on street

& then you get to a protected bikeway & 🥳.

Walking & biking as transportation means I can pause to notice and appreciate boulevard roosters (& other free curb items). 🐓

Bike advocacy is a really glamorous way to spend my free time.

It sometimes means sending lots of emails over multiple years asking for really basic stuff (like bike parking at a city playground), before finally seeing if I can make it happen myself.

Sound on for sights & sounds of biking with kids in Minneapolis:

My 5 yo hasn’t quite grasped the knock knock joke format yet. 😂

Hello and welcome to almost every light cycle at 35th and Nicollet in City of Minneapolis. 🙃

In addition to red light runners, we also have a special guest on the left - fully blocking the faded crosswalk while they wait for their green (no right turn possible there).
