In the 1960s & 1970s in the absence of mainstream publishers many Black voices would never have been heard if not for small independent African American publishers. How do we keep the work alive now that the publishers and poets themselves are passing on?

And he probably won't. That so many journalists have misunderstood this mentality, or perhaps parroted a line, speaks volumes, especially since the predominant inclinations tend to be fairly predictable—at least from a Hughesian vantage point.

Some of the facts about our history are so horrific that many people can't believe them, let alone process them. It's easier to pretend these things never happened. (BTW, the author, Marcus Rediker, is one of the most respected historians of our era.)👇🏾
