Had an enquiry about Bonnington square and came across this photo from 1965 showing the north side of the square with shops on the corner of Vauxhall Grove. And then an older apportionment file plan from 1885.

View north from The Pavement to Old Town , taken by Henry Deane the chemist c1860. The building on the left was the Fire Brigade and in the small cottage opposite was a toy shop run by Alexander Thornton and his sister Hannah. The Cock Tavern is just visible on the right.

As we get to learn about our new locality on Brixton Hill, so you too can come to Lambeth Archives to find out the history of your neighbourhood. This parade of shops (c1910) is on Brixton Hill west side, looking north towards central Brixton. Corpus Christi Church is visible.

Yesterday a customer viewed the enclosure map from 1806. Amongst other things, it shows that Brixton Hill (where Lambeth Archives is now situated) used to the Brixton Causeway. So, here is a aquatint of the Brixton Causeway drawn by J. Dillon c1784. Note the river Effra.

February 29th was the Lambeth Archives Launch Event and a good time was had by all. It was great to be reminded that there has been a Local Authority Archives in Lambeth for 134 years, at the same time as celebrating our fantastic new purpose-built Archive and exhibition space.

We are back! We reopened on 12th Feb. Here are some photos of our first visitors, those who had been eagerly awaiting our reopening to get on with their research or to find necessary information. Why don't you come to visit too? See what treasures you may find.

The archives look good framed by the new shelving. The first week of moving was a success! It is surprising how long it takes to move almost 2 miles of archive material, keeping it in the correct order, even with a large team of movers, staff and volunteers. Thanks everyone!

Venn Street, off Clapham High Street, was built over the network of alleyways and courts that made up the original Clapham Rectory Estate at the end of the nineteenth century, replacing many of the original cottages with Victorian terraces and shops of the sort seen here c1915.
