Lots of chatter about swine to human spillovers of H1N2 viruses. Check our preprint on alpha-del H1N2 viruses and their pandemic potential to transmit to ferrets even in the context of preexisting immunity. We also devise a pipeline for risk assessment biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

New work by Linsey Marr https://www.threads.net/@linseycmarr and @lakdawala_lab demonstrate that decay of viruses can be biased based on droplet size and relative humidity. Decay kinetics of influenza H1N1 viruses is more similar to SARS-CoV-2 than bacteriophage Phi6. journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/mb…

New paper with S_Lakdawala 🏳️‍🌈 peter vikesland shows similar decay rates of SARS-CoV-2 & influenza virus in droplets, some differences in wet vs. dry and by initial droplet size. Evaporation dynamics matter. journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/mb…

I used to think that 'face condom' was an insulting way to refer to a mask, but the Cochrane review made me think differently. Both condoms and masks are physical barriers that work best when worn properly and consistently. If not, the failure rate is troublesome.

Synonymous mutations have massive effects on protein activity. Never knew that.

Take a protein & make a fast + slow-translated version.

For one enzyme, fast translation caused 20% drop in activity. Simulation + experiments show 'entangled states.' Weird. nature.com/articles/s4155…

A study in Scientific Reports finds that a commercial toilet flush produces a strong chaotic jet with velocities exceeding 2 meters per second that can transport aerosols as high as 1.5 meters within eight seconds. go.nature.com/3YbLhnN

I know there has been criticism about this or that, but I have to say as someone who has worked on indoor air quality issues for 30 years I am so pleased to FINALLY have both robust discussion and action taken on IAQ by The White House.

As a mandatory reporter, it is wildly inappropriate to tell a student who is tearfully reporting something to you TO NOT REPORT IT.

The moment they report it you are obligated to report it.

FTR, I am making a big deal out of this bc IT IS A BIG DEAL.

Hooray! 'ASHRAE...today announced its commitment to support the expedited development of a national indoor air quality (IAQ) pathogen mitigation standard. The goal is to finalize the consensus-based, code enforceable standard within six months.' ashrae.org/about/news/202…
