I’m an ER doctor and former Chief Physician for Public Health. Here are 6 major threats to your family’s health that you’re probably not thinking about— But should be. A 🧵 worth your attention:

Threat #1: Gun violence. It’s the leading cause of death among kids and teens in the U.S. Has been. More than car crashes. More than cancer. This is a public health emergency. And the trauma doesn’t end with the bullet. It ripples.

Threat #2: Antibiotic resistance. Every time we prescribe when we shouldn’t, or you don’t finish the full course— We push bacteria to evolve. Resistance already kills over a million people a year. It could outpace cancer by 2050.

Threat #3: Climate collapse. Record heat, smoke inhalation, asthma flares, vector-borne disease expansion.. Climate change is already a health threat. The ER sees it: dehydration, arrhythmias, displaced elderly. The respiratory problems from wildfire smoke. It’s TODAY’S problem.

Threat #4: Misinformation. False health claims spread faster than science. Anti-vaccine posts, bogus theories, miracle cures— They erode trust, delay treatment, and cost lives. We’re losing this war.

Threat #5: Domestic violence. This isn’t “just” a law enforcement issue. It’s a leading driver of injury, mental illness, and death—especially for women. And most ERs still miss it. Because many patients never say a word…until it’s too late.

Threat #6: ERs are failing older adults. Dementia, polypharmacy, long wait times— Our system is built for trauma and acute care. Not frailty. Too many older patients are harmed by the very place meant to help.
