OK, OK. We'll admit it. The 1843 first edition of "A Christmas Carol" (of which the Library has 3 copies!) is the quintessential version of the story. (But "The Muppet Christmas Carol" is a close second!) Stephanie Stillo, chief of the Rare Book Division, gives us a closer look.

O Holy Night. Based on a French poem by Placide Cappeau, the song tells the story of the first Christmas Eve. It was first performed in a village in rural France in 1847 and is now sung on Christmas Eve all over the world. Happy Christmas from the west of Ireland🎄

Auld Lang Syne, the Scots-language poem written by Robert Burns in 1788, was set to a much older Scottish/Irish melody and is now sung all over the world to welcome the new year. Happy New Year from the west of Ireland!

The Magna Carta & US Declaration of Independence were written in Oak Gall ink. Wasps lay eggs in developing leaf buds, which results in these round shapes. These have been used to produce ink for thousands of years.

How many of our park's mammals have you been able to spot? Next time you visit, print one of these checklists to keep track. For an easier challenge, try our smaller list with the most iconic ones.
