If it weren’t for journalists who, at times, risk their lives to keep us informed; we would be in the dark. There are some who like us there—in the dark—but the people on these covers and pages, do everything they can to shed light. Thanks TIME. Committee to Protect Journalists

So appropriate that TIME recognized journalists so broadly. I am especially gratified to see #CapitalGazette, one of my first newspapers, singled out for their work under devastating circumstances. #JournalismMatters #LocalNews

In a few weeks I will be showing some of my #Syrian paintings at Western Illinois University. I want to show as many people as possible the courage, struggle, and ongoing perseverance of my #Syrian brothers and sisters. Now, as always, we need to keep our #EyesOnIdlib OPEN!

PACER charges 10 cents a page for electronic access to federal court filings. Actual cost of storage and transmission, by one estimate: $0.0000006 per page. What access to public records ought to cost: zero. nytimes.com/2019/02/04/us/…

A thread about boycotting a McClatchy CEO's planned lunch with employees after buyouts. Fun fact: That CEO's monthly traveling/housing stipend ($35K/month) is literally how much I make in a year. Do not be quiet about your salaries. Silence is their ally, not yours.

A reminder that our colleagues overseas put themselves on the line every day to bring us honest reporting from some of the world's most dangerous places.

As we reflect on why we are grateful, read these memories from Holocaust survivors about their first #Thanksgiving. For many, it was a moment when they felt they belonged. “I cherish this holiday to this very day,” said Lucine Horn, who immigrated in November 1950.

Had the most amazing brisket in the history of the world ⁦⁦Oyamel DC⁩. Went a little crazy and now have leftovers. We love supporting DC restaurants, especially those of humanitarian ⁦Chef José Andrés 🕊️🥘🍳⁩.

Nice to see prominent national journalists on here supporting struggling local newspapers. But there are reasons many of these journos never worked for such papers (beyond industry erosion): The pay is low, the work is unglamorous, it's hard to advance & you can't live in NY/DC

At barely five feet tall, Ben was a towering figure. It was impossible to meet him and not be changed in some way. He often spoke about how civilized, educated Germans became complicit in the Holocaust. We all must speak up in the face of hate.

There is no acceptable reason for the startlingly higher death rates among Black moms and their babies. The The Associated Press spent a year reporting on the structural racism underlying this phenomenon. Please read.
