For lesbian women who were raised in high-control religious groups, coming out as lesbian also means coming out of a religious community and losing family and friends.

Aside from a general cultural prohibition on non-religious self-expression in Rwanda, severe legal penalties are also enforced for expressing criticism of religion. Non-religious asylum seekers often seek refuge in the UK because they were oppressed by blasphemy laws back home.
