This is the real fault line in academia & the current strife: who do universities exist to serve: the students or the ruling class?

It also poses a real challenge for liberal academia, caught between its desire for attention from elected Democrats and MSNBC; & its embrace of neoliberal rhetorics of 'care' that depoliticize the demands of students while prompting concern for their treatment.

This is just narcissistic navel-gazing. Step outside Yale, Harvard etc and it’s very, very easy to see that what trashed this postwar ideal was declining state funding, enforced austerity, and a deeply anti-intellectual administrative/board structure.

The images from US campuses are a stinging reminder of how many Americans are wishing for the treacherous peace and quiet of the 1950s. One day folks complain that students are social media junkies, the next day they don't like that they're protesting. Can't have it both ways.

If there’s any meaningful work for the professoriate in this moment on earth, it is this.
