I once sold straw hats to buy my first laptop, so I understand how challenging it can be to overcome resource constraints. That’s why I’m proud to support @I_am_Sang__, a “fighter” and CyberGirl alum who has faced significant hurdles, including the lack of a functional laptop.

Who would have thought that my AltSchool Africa capstone project, my cloud-native talks, articles and events would land me an all-expense paid trip to London?🤭 Divine Odazie 🥑 told me to apply for this, gave me a guide, reviewed my application and it was approved! However…(a thread)

Before I continue, The KubeCon + CloudNativeCon event is not just a conference! It is one of the biggest cloud-native events in Europe. It provides the best learning and networking experience for cloud-native individuals. As a young girl in tech, it’s more than a trip for me.

It is a chance to grow, connect, and bring my dreams closer. It’s a chance to learn and get insights, a chance to get access to top professionals and boost my career. A good opportunity right? However, the UK Embassy denied my VISA 🥲 I didn’t even get a right to appeal 🥲

One of the reasons they gave is that they feel I won’t return to my country after the 5-days event😅 I’m making this tweet to say that I will return to Nigeria immediately after this event! I also want to ask if there’s anything that could be done as the event is in a few days🙏

Divine said “you lose 100% of the chances you don’t take”. I believe it’s not over until it’s over! I applied and got this funding out of thousands of applicants. I’ve come this far and I’m not ready to give up without a fight. Thank you Divine Odazie 🥑 for guiding me through this. 🙏

The event holds on the 1st of April to the 5th. I have barely 10 days left 😭 I got the rejection mail yesterday and I type this with tears in my eyes. The Linux Foundation (organizers) also sent me a VISA request letter but I was still denied.

I've realised that excellence in any aspect of life doesn't require the extraordinary. It actually requires careful attention to detail, commitment, and a growth mindset. These are so basic that they're overlooked. Talent is important but it plays a small role.

I just remembered a position I applied for late last year & didn't get. Today, I woke up & realised that based on my natural inclinations & interests, that job would have made me miserable. Yes, I had the knowledge but the job didn't suit my personality or align with my core.

Read the books and autobiographies of people you admire; those who wrote not solely to make money, but to preserve and pass on their knowledge. Trust me, there’s a depth such individuals are willing to reach that conventional authors often won’t.

Funny how we procrastinate the things we're naturally good at. Maybe it's not laziness, but the quiet arrogance of knowing we’ll probably succeed anyway. So we delay. And delay. Until greatness becomes a maybe. Christiana C.A John
