Having great visuals mainly depends on the skill of the filmmakers; cameras, lenses, and formats are just the icing on the cake.

One of the alluring misconceptions of independent filmmaking is the belief that cheaper digital cameras are the democratizers of production value.

A lot of people believed they could make great visuals with an iPhone because of Emmanuel Lubezki’s work with it.

Multiple clashing truths over letterboxd $20 rental prices this week. Art should, ideally, be more accessible. But under the current system, people who’ve made an undistributed indie also need to eat. Audiences and filmmakers aren’t each other’s enemies.

I find it rather embarrassing that critics are heralding Sinners as some masterpiece.

It’s by no means a great work of art and empty at it’s core.

The desires of "the average person" aren't fixed but rather the result of forces much larger than themselves. The degradation of taste and literacy in general can be traced to a variety of technological and economic factors that have nothing to do with an inherent human stupidity

Too many people think things are the way they are because of nature or some natural disposition that human beings can’t break free from. Society and its forces don’t just come into being by chance though. Like history, the present is something that can be studied and understood.

*Understood beyond platitudes and received wisdom about “human nature” or the stupidity and incuriosity of the masses. There are many reasons things like Harry Potter and the Avengers are as popular as they are in this particular historical moment as opposed to any other.
