The Giving Tree’s backstory: Brennan Manning and Shel Silverstein were friends. Manning asked Shel (can I call him Shel?) his thoughts of God. Later, Mr. Silverstein (Shel didn’t feel right) handed him The Giving Tree and said the tree was how he saw God.
