Thank God. No one should have to choose between union solidarity and pursuing their research work via conference papers

So, here's how this abortion issue works politically in Canada and is reported by 'journalists.'

1. It always starts with Conservative MPs advancing private members bills to protect the foetus or participating in anti-abortion demonstrations.

2. In response, the Liberals…

I don't love a lot of the messaging coming from these student camps, but I do love the Charter and want cops and universities to respect it. That's so even if unis are not formally 'government' - their whole raison d'etre is open debate in the pursuit of knowledge.

Thankfully our feminist mothers used 'person' in Charter section 28 to avoid this particular flavour of bullshit down the line.

Problem with the notwithstanding clause in a (UK flavoured) nutshell: 'Of course everyone believes in some rights – normally their own and those of friends, family and people they identify with. It is “other people’s” freedoms that are more problematic.'

I predicted exactly this all the way back in 2016 and paid a reputational price for it, commenting on the insane and incomprehensible alliance between 'feminists' (those resentful harpies) and Islamic fundamentalists.

And the law protecting pwd in New Brunswick from labour exploitation remains unproclaimed by cabinet. Why the stall to do what’s right.

I just did the calculations for abortion in NB using 2022 data - it's 7.26 per 1000 women of childbearing age, versus 12.3 nationally. Our neighbours, Nova Scotia and Maine come out at 10.95 and 9.1. Even PEI has a higher rate at 9 per 1000. Obv Reg 84-20 is having an effect.

I think as the populist threats to use the notwithstanding clause become more extreme and difficult to square with the original, underlying principles behind s.33 the SCC will be prompted to revisit Ford. That or, you know, we're all screwed.

Reminds me of when I joined the office xmas party cttee. Told that we had to use a certain venue & entertainment & needed to fall within a modest budget. Other than that, we were entirely free to design an event best for employees! More serious consequences, same absurdity here.
