Say congrats to Aniket Khairnar, a grad student working with me, on his first first-author paper hitting the @arXiv! We'll see if I have time for a thread tomorrow… Approximate helical symmetry in compact binaries arxiv.org/abs/2410.16373 Aniket, me, and Mike Boyle

It's a new preprint day! arxiv.org/abs/2411.11269. I may do a thread on this later, but for now the main takeaway (for those that know about ringdowns) is that high overtones are excited in black hole mergers and can be stably extracted, so long as you also fit for nonlinear QNMs!

🎉New paper day🎉 A tale of tails! Finally resolved in fully nonlinear 3+1d numerical relativity with SXS Project simulations. Late-time tails in nonlinear evolutions of merging black holes De Amicis et al. arxiv.org/abs/2412.06887 What's it all about? 1/15

Could we tell whether anyone in our galaxy uses a warp drive? This sounds like a crazy question, but it can be answered using numerical GR (one of the fun highlights of the annual theory meeting presented by Katy Clough) 🧵1/7

Happening right now! It looks like LIGO is teaming up with (electromagnetic) telescopes tonight to search for the light coming from either a binary neutron star merger or a black hole neutron star merger!! Wow!! gracedb.ligo.org/superevents/S2…

Possible fast radio burst (FRB) associated with the recent LIGO event!! "CHIME/FRB source FRB 20250206A detected less than 1 minute after LIGO merger S250206dm, with the probability of spatial coincidence is order 0.1% " astronomerstelegram.org/?read=17021

🎉 We have reached 200 candidates in O4! 🎉 The fourth observing run (O4) of our detector network has had the best performance so far, with more candidates than ever before! We are currently busy analysing all these wonderful data and look forward to sharing results #O4IsHere

Happy #BlackHoleWeek! To celebrate, we’re releasing the highest-resolution ray-traced still from one of our simulations to date. This tweet has a low res preview. To zoom into the full 43,200 × 21,600 pixel rendering, head to black-holes.org/2025/05/07/Bbh…

A recent paper led by SXS members Yoonsoo Kim and Elias Most (both at Caltech) is in AAS Nova today! This work explores the formation of strongly magnetized "monster" shocks and a transient "black hole pulsar" state from mergers of a magnetized neutron star and a black hole.
