It is clear the justice system is failing victims of all forms of gender based violence.

Recent fatalities tell us this, recent high profile sexual violence cases show us this, the work of the Victims of Crime Commissioner Australian Human Rights Commission & others have documented those failures time & time again.…

All men have a role to play in stopping men’s violence and creating a safe and respectful society.

Calling out disrespectful behaviour is one part of the solution.

I urge the government to do more across the spectrum - prevention, early intervention and frontline services.

A simplistic knee-jerk law and order response is a distraction from the complex and comprehensive whole-of-society work that needs to be done to address the gendered violence epidemic and keep women in our State safe.
And thats going to actually cost some money.

Bail laws are just one piece of the puzzle. There needs to be a full overhaul of every part of the system, with victim-survivor safety front and centre.

The domestic violence sector is extremely under-funded. Every time another life is lost, we hear leaders say more needs to be done. But we need more than empty words. We need more than reviews of systems and processes. It’s time their words are turned into action.
