Psst…can I be real a second about work life balance? For just a millisecond? Let down my guard and tell the people how I feel a second? /thread

I just went to my postdoc reunion today (people over 30+ years attended), and while it was SO great to catch up with people, and without getting into details, I got humiliated in front of everyone in a way that cut deep. So I'm just going to say: 1/n

Congratulations to our undergrad, Afra Rahman, for placing second in the 5th Annual MedSci Poster Fair. A tradition that began last year, when Irene Sotomayor-Rodriguez also finished second. Things like this always make you proud, no matter what. Anil Menon UC Undergraduate College of Medicine

Our undergrads, Afra Rahman and Dharshini Kumar, represented us at the #APS2024 with their awesome science and UNO skills. P.S. I won most (not all) games!

Quit my PhD yesterday! Pretty proud of myself. It wasn’t easy but I wasn’t sure I was going to survive another few years (literally) and I knew my baby needed his mommy alive so it’s what I had to do.

My rules for academia: 1. there are many paths to success, look for your own, 2. if the project excites you, do it; if it doesn’t, don’t. 3. let the project change, that’s what it’s supposed to do, 4. review the work of as you’d want to be reviewed, 5. one sentence, one idea.

One thing to appreciate about ‘systems biology’ is how difficult it is to define it. Is it modeling a system analytically & then testing the model, or is it a data-driven approach for reverse engineering? Or is systems biology simply an ‘attitude’, as Marc Kirschner used to say?

Rosalind Franklin was already a renowned structural biologist when on July 25, 1955 - her 35th birthday - she wrote to her dept. chair requesting a well-deserved raise. The arguments would be familiar to any academic today!

What I don't get about academia is the chronic lack of celebration. It is hard to get & maintain grant funding, hard to get papers accepted without Faustian bargains, hard to be a great mentor, & hard to maximize trainee success. All of it is hard. We should celebrate everything.

I can’t believe I did it. It took me 24 years—started college in 2000, failed out, lost my Pell grant, went to community college while working two jobs, went back on loans, got married, had a baby, got divorced, finished by myself, published my dissertation—may ease finally come.

Edel Pérez-López Consider writing a 'dominant positive' review to counteract the almost inevitable 'dominant negative' review that someone will write, nitpicking the paper to editorial rejection.
